The Metolius is firing on all cylinders right now. PMDs, Caddis, Little Olive Stones, and Golden Stones are all showing strong through the day, giving you reliable dry and dry-dropper windows—early mornings, late afternoons, and shaded pockets are your golden hours. Dry flies like Elk Hair Caddis, Purple Haze, and X-Caddis continue to draw surface takes, while Nitro Caddis Pupae and Jig PMD nymphs thrive below the surface. Midday, subsurface tactics shine: Euro and indicator rigs with Jigged Frenchies, Purple Perdigons, Berry’s PCPs, Zebra Midges, and Micro Mayflies are consistently catching trout.
That said, streamers are calling—and not just for trout. Bull trout are still lurking in the deeper canyon pools and undercut boulder zones. Swing or strip small weighted patterns like soft-hackle leeches or sculpzilla-style streamers through these spots just after dark and you can get surprised by a big, aggressive take.
It’s a full-spectrum week on the Metolius—bug-driven dry/dropper action through dawn and dusk, steady nymphing under the bright sun, and streamer opportunities in low light. Come ready with a diverse fly box and long, clean drifts. This stretch’s clear water and varied structure reward anglers who bring both finesse and punch.
