The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is fishing consistently well as we move deeper into July. Flows are stable, clarity is good, and both trout and whitefish are feeding steadily throughout the day.

Nymphing continues to be the main driver. Zebra Midges in olive, red, or black, size 16 black mini jig leeches, Fire Starters, and Scuds are all putting fish in the net. Euro and indicator rigs are both working—focus on seams, pockets, and any deeper boulder-lined runs.

Dry-dropper setups are still very effective. A smaller terrestrial-style dry like a Chubby paired with a Zebra Midge or Scud dropper is a great way to cover water, especially in riffles and tailouts. Caddis activity is building now too, giving anglers more reason to watch for surface eats in the afternoons and evenings, especially along shaded banks and slower foam lines.

Evening has been producing the best dry fly action with fish rising to Caddis adults, PMD emergers, and small soft hackles. If things get quiet, swinging a small leech or sculpin pattern through deeper water can turn up more aggressive fish, including the occasional larger trout.

All said, this is classic Crooked River summer fishing: technical but consistent, with a variety of bugs in play and fish feeding throughout the day. Mornings and evenings are your best bet for dry fly opportunities, while mid-day stays steady with small nymphs and leeches tight to structure.
