Lower Provo River - Provo, UT

River Information
Fish Species: | Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout |
Flowing from Deer Creek Dam to Utah Lake, the Lower Provo River is one of Utah’s premier year-round tailwater trout fisheries. Known for its prolific hatches and wild brown trout population, the Lower Provo offers challenging, technical water ideal for fly anglers.
Trout average 12–16 inches, with larger browns reaching 20+ inches. Fly anglers succeed with sow bugs, zebra midges, and mayfly patterns during winter and early spring. Summer brings reliable PMD, caddis, and terrestrial action, providing excellent dry fly and emerger fishing. Spin anglers can use small jigs and spinners, but the river is restricted to artificial flies and lures only, with a two-trout daily limit.
The Provo River Parkway Trail offers exceptional access with multiple parking areas, footbridges, and trails along the river. Wading is manageable in most sections, though anglers should monitor dam release flows.
This tailwater maintains consistent temperatures, offering productive fishing even in the coldest months. Catch-and-release practices are encouraged to preserve the quality of the fishery.
With its scenic setting, healthy trout population, and fly-friendly conditions, the Lower Provo River is a top-tier destination for both local and visiting anglers. Always check current regulations and flow conditions before fishing
