The Upper Deschutes continues to fish well with fish holding close to logjams, lava shelves, undercut banks, and shaded current breaks. Morning and evening remain the prime fishing windows, but quality fish are still being found during the day by focusing on deeper holding water and softer seams. 

Caddis continue to lead the evening hatch, while PMDs provide dependable dry fly opportunities through the afternoon. Terrestrials are becoming increasingly important as August settles in, with ants and beetles producing fish along grassy banks and overhanging vegetation.

Subsurface presentations continue to produce the majority of fish. Olive Perdigons, Jig Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, tan caddis pupa, and Golden Stone nymphs are all producing when drifted naturally through deeper runs and around woody cover. Anglers looking for larger browns are continuing to move fish by slowly stripping compact olive streamers around cut banks and logjams during the low-light hours.
