Los Vaqueros Trip

Los Vaqueros Reservoir - Livermore, CA (Contra Costa County)

On May 8, 2026, Paul Clouse, Al Hurwitz, and Abel Wong had one of the best days of their fishing careers! We trolled Los Vaqueros Reservoir (LVR) for a shorter day due to higher winds in the early AM. Once we got on the lake, though, it was “lights out”! We trolled Cox and Howden Coves in the AM and early afternoon, and landed three limits of Mt. Lassen Rainbow Trout (15 Rainbows), as well as two very nice Striped Bass. The total weight of the 17 fish was 41.5 pounds! The fish were in shallow water, usually in less than 15 foot water columns, the Stripers perhaps being slightly deeper. We were using a Streamer Fly with scent applied. Earlier on, we had essentially no action with Jointed Rapalas. A remarkable day! The fish all fought very well, some with aerial jumps and terrific runs. Of note, we had 15 minutes remaining to get our boat off the lake, and still managed to catch the remaining two Trout under the wire  to achieve our three limits of Trout.
Pictured here is Paul with a beautiful Striper, Al with 5.3 and 6.5 pound Mt. Lassen Rainbows, a photo of the fish collected on the dock, and finally Al, Abel, and Paul posing with the day’s catch. It looked like folks casting lures and using PowerBait were also doing very well.
The water was clear with a surface temperature ranging from 60-65 degrees. Breezy and cool in the AM, but then sunny, warm, and calm in the afternoon. We will definitely be back soon if the winds permit.
As always the LVR stall are very accommodating to help us get on and off the lake smoothly.
         All the best,
