Paul Clouse and Al Hurwitz trolled Los Vaqueros Reservoir on August 11, 2026, looking for summertime Rainbow Trout and Striped Bass. A windy morning with wave activity made it difficult initially to get to our usual deep water summertime Trout spot (a 90-120 foot deep water column close to Cox Cove). Therefore, we took a detour to the quiet shallow back waters of Peninsula Cove where we hooked up and released seven Striped Bass. The Bass were great fighters on light tackle, but were only 12-15 inches in length (not legal size), and so were all released in good condition.
Later in the afternoon, the winds died down, and we returned to the deep water off of Cox Cove where we finished up with a nice stringer of five beautiful Mt. Lassen Rainbow Trout, with an aggregate weight of 7.5 pounds (see attached photo).
Our fishing method today was to troll single or tandem hook streamer flies capped in front with an action “Wiggle Disc” to make the fly “flutter” in the water as it’s trolled. The flies were trolled 15 feet below the surface using lead core line attached to a 40 foot fluorocarbon leader. Attractant scent is sprayed on the flies. Interestingly, the Stripers huddled in the back of Peninsula Cove in shallow warm water, while the Rainbows sought the cooler deeper water columns off of Cox Cove.
The water was extremely clear with a surface temperature of 69.5-71 degrees.
A very good day of fishing, considering the early winds and wave activity. We will be back soon, and are very appreciative for the staff’s assistance in getting us on and off the water
