East Walker River

The East is running at about 100 cfs today. Flows have been going up and down a bit this past week, but the changes haven’t seemed to affect the fishing too much. Overall, reports have been very good, with most anglers having productive days primarily on nymphs, along with a little streamer action mixed in.

The Mile section has been producing quality fish rather than large numbers, with most anglers reporting between 3 and 8 fish per day. The average size has been impressive, running around 18 to 19 inches. It sounds like many of the fish that have moved back into the Mile are larger fish. Lower sections and areas into Nevada have been producing higher numbers of fish, though not quite as many 20-inchers as the upper sections.

Patterns to try:
Perdigon, Rainbow Warrior, Silver Streak, Darth Baetis, Zebra Midge, Flashback Emerger, Psycho Prince, Squirmy Wormy, Jig Head Worm, San Juan Worm, Sculpzilla, Ziwi, Double Bunny, and Dead Drift Crayfish.

Sceirine Ranch

The ranch has also been kicking out some very good fish this past week, with browns and rainbows up to around 23 inches being reported. Fish are still eating stonefly nymphs, along with many of the smaller nymphs mentioned above. Streamer action has been decent, though most of the success continues to come on nymphs.

Bridgeport Reservoir

The reservoir continues to produce lots of nice fish, with the largest reported this week coming in at nearly 8.5 pounds. Shore anglers are still finding success with inflated crawlers, Mice Tails, pinched crawlers, and PowerBait.

Trollers are doing well with crawlers, Needlefish, Thomas Buoyants, and Rapalas. There has also been decent bait fishing action near Rainbow Point.

Kirman Lake

We haven’t heard anything from Kirman yet, but we’ll be sure to pass along any information we receive.

Twin Lakes

We’re seeing some good fish come from the Twins this week as well, including a 9-plus-pound brown caught in the Lower Lake. Shore anglers are finding success with pinched crawlers, Mice Tails, inflated crawlers, and by casting Rapalas and Thomas Buoyants during the mornings and evenings.

Trollers are using Needlefish, Rapalas, Thomas Buoyants, and Speedy Shiners.

West Walker River

We still haven’t heard much news from the West lately. If you’ve spent some time up there and would like to share a report, give us a call!

Virginia Lakes

We haven’t heard much from the Virginias lately. It sounds like the ice is still trying to fully melt off. There is some fishable water available, but reports of good action have been limited. As the weather warms and the ice disappears completely, fishing should continue to improve.

California Boater Card Information

I had a customer call asking whether non-residents of California are required to have a California Boater Card. I didn’t know the answer at the time, so I looked it up. Here is the wording from the FAQ section of CaliforniaBoaterCard.com:

According to California law, the following persons are not required to have a boater card to operate a motorized vessel on California waterways:

  • A person operating a rental vessel.

  • A person operating a vessel under the direct supervision of someone 18 years or older who possesses a California Boater Card.

  • A resident of another state temporarily operating a vessel in California for less than 60 days who meets the boating requirements of their home state.

  • A resident of another country temporarily operating a vessel in California for less than 90 days who meets the boating requirements of their home country.

  • A person operating a vessel in an organized regatta, vessel race, or water ski race.

  • A person in possession of a current commercial fishing license.

  • A person holding a valid marine operator license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard or a valid certificate issued under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

  • A person who has successfully completed a boating course approved by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Hope this helps clear up some questions!
