Current Water Conditions

Flows on the Truckee River have leveled out nicely this week—holding around 62 CFS out of Tahoe City, 92 CFS through town, and 400 CFS at Farad. With the upper river running lower, more trout are stacking up in the canyon stretch. The bite has slowed down a bit as winter approaches.

Water Temperatures

Steady low-50s, with 46 degrees being the low temperature.

Hatches

No specific hatches to report, but anglers should use tiny dries if they are dry fly fishing.

Effective Tactics

Indicator fishing through the slow pools for best results. Light tippet and and 10-foot rod can help you control your flies in the lower flows this time of year. The best time for dry fly fishing is from 11am-2pm. Remember, until April 22nd, there is a no bait, no kill policy. Anglers must catch and release all fish.

Catch Report

Anglers are finding plenty of rainbows and browns in the 12–16 inch range from Glenshire through Hirschdale, with larger browns up to 24 inches showing up in deeper canyon pools. The best bite continues to be early and late in the day.
