The flows along the Truckee have remained nice and consistent over the last few weeks, with the Glenshire area at around 350 CFS and below the Boca confluence at 650 CFS. It’s exciting to see such excellent flows for this time of year and it really leaves the whole river open to good fishing conditions.

In general, due to the warmer water upstream, we recommend fishing down in the canyon sections of the river, so long as you don’t mind a bit of hiking and rock hopping. We did see the Farad gauge hit 68 degrees two days in a row last week, but since then we have seen this drop and with the cooler days ahead we should see this trend continue for now.

Typical for mid-summer fishing, the fish are holding in fast water. Using euro nymph tactics will be the best way to maximize your odds when fishing this tough river. Using a hopper dropper can be another great way to fish right now as the grasshoppers are buzzing around with regularity. If using this method, make sure to fish with a heavy tungsten bead head nymph, and use a 2+ foot drop below the hopper to make sure you’re getting down in front of them.

For euro nymphing, using crawdads and stoneflies remain your best bet for anchors with perdigons in sizes 14-18 on your tag. The main bugs on the Truckee right now are crawdads, golden stones, PMDs and caddis. With the long days, good flows and reasonable temperatures happening right now, this is such a great time to be on the river!
