Happy Father’s Day to all the fishermen.
It is nice to see several streams above the Iron Gate Dam (removed) having juvenile fish being trapped and counted. If this continues eventually the Upper Klamath will recover and see an anadromous fish run. This is great news and could eventually allow a Salmon fishery for the Klamath River. Now will that help the Trinity? That will be the Question!! I am very happy to see that the removal of the Dams on the Klamath is seeing some good results as predicted from the science. Now CDFW and the Tribes will have to build on those results!
The results on the Klamath rive could help bring back Salmon fishing to the Trinity but that is something only time will tell. In my experience of stream rehabilitation, it usually takes about four to five years to get a steady return of anadromous fish returns. It does work but it still takes time and help. The form of help is by increasing fish hatchery production not shutting sown fish hatcheries. It is sad news that CDFW is closing the Mad River fish hatchery. It seems as though the state wants to shut down all fish hatcheries. CDFW all ready loses 3,000 to 5,000 fishermen per year. (buying fish licenses) This is a great loss of funds for fishing projects. With the loss of hatcheries and the loss of people not buying fish licenses people are going out of state to fish.
I just got back from a two-week trip to Montana, Wyoming, Utha, and Colorado. I checked many rivers, the Snake, Yellow Stone, Madison, Henery, Lake Ennis, Stillwater and the Upper Colorado and they were all high and muddy from snow melt and rain. The rivers were so high that you couldn’t even get into the water to cast a line. Any place the had an area that you might be able to fish was already taken. Some places you had to have a boat to fish so I was out of luck on that point. I did have a great time even though I couldn’t go fishing I saw a lot of great water.
The Trinity is finally down to wading and in some pace swimming and a lot of sun bathing. It is not down to summer flows yet but is on its way so one should be cautious. At Kimtu Beach and Big Rock the river looks great but still had a swift current so one has to be careful when trying to swim.
Note: The river reports are not complete as the California Data Exchange Center is not complete in their reporting for some reason!
Lewiston Lake: The releases from Trinity Lake into Lewiston Lake are still high. Lewiston Lake should be fishing well by now as the releases into the lake are diminishing. My recommendation would be to try and contact the Pine Cove Marina and ask Louise or Matt (530)778-3878); for the Upper Trinity River you can call Indian Creek Lodge, Andy or Hannah, (530)623-6294), Junction City Store, Butch, (530)623-2803.
Willow Creek: Fishing the Willow Creek area would be fair if you get there before the sunbathers of swimmers. Fishing below Big Rock or up above where the South Fork comes in should be fair as the river drops.
Mid-Klamath to Happy Camp: The Klamath River at Weitchpec is flowing 7,674cfs. This is a decrease of 5,993cfs. The Iron Gate/Bogus Creek area is flowing 1,296cfs a decrease of 886cfs from the last report. To get the latest fishing information I suggest you call Marble Mountain Guest Ranch (800) 522-6284, or Scott Caldwell, SC Guide Service (530)905-0758 to get proper fishing information to fish the Upper Klamath.
