A Spectacular Los Vaqueros Reservoir Outing!

Paul Clouse and Al Hurwitz trolled Los Vaqueros Reservoir on 5/29/25 after a 1+ hour AM delay due to high morning winds. The outing was perhaps our best ever catching 19 fish! The total included 13 Mt. Lassen Rainbow Trout, ranging from 1/2-3.5 pounds, the average being about 2 pounds. In addition there were 6 Striped Bass caught, ranging from 19-22 inches in length. Both the number and size of the fish was a very pleasant and unexpected surprise.
 
Pictured below is a “duet” of 1/2 to 3/4 pound Mt. Lassens in the net after a double hook-up. Also shown are some of the beautiful Rainbows and Striped Bass we caught. All 13 of the Rainbows were caught in various areas of Cox and East Coves, while the Stripers were caught equally in Cox, East, and Howden Coves.
 
We “downsized” our approach, using 1/4 oz. RoxStar Fly Striker Spinner Flies and a Mickey Finn Streamer Fly, all trolled 8-10 feet below the surface. We used a “wiggle disc” in front of the Mickey Finn Streamer to give it more action on the troll. Scent was applied to all the flies. Of interest, a J-9 Jointed Rapala Floating Lure trolled for about 1 hour elicited no bites, suggesting that the smaller finess approach was the way to go.
 
The water was quite clear, and the lake level is at maximum. The surface water temperature remains cool at 62-65 degrees in spite of the warm weather. The high lake level, good water clarity, and relatively low water temperature all resulted in an excellent trolling experience.

Ted Cribari, Al Hurwitz, and Abel Wong did some dedicated trolling of Lake Del Valle on 5/22/25. We were searching for Rainbow Trout and Bass. Regrettably, the action was very slow, with only two strikes and no fish caught. We trolled all sections of the Lake with feathered spinners and jointed Rapalas (all the lures had scent applied), trolling 15–16 feet below the surface in 20-30 foot water columns.
