Colorado River - Laughlin - Laughlin, NV

Here are a few stripers we caught a while back. This is about the size that should be running now—but they’re not. The striper bite has slowed down on Lake Mohave, and anglers are mostly just driving around looking for fish.
The largemouth bass are in spawning mode—either on the nest or guarding fry (baby fish). While striped bass are being spotted, they’re not showing much interest in bait or lures right now.
I have to say, in my opinion, the upcoming fishing derby at Lake Mohave is poorly timed. These anglers will be catching smallmouth and largemouth bass, weighing them, and then releasing them. While that’s generally okay, the problem is that many of these bass are caught off their nests or while guarding fry. Once released, they often don’t return to protect their nests, and the fry become easy prey for carp—there goes next year’s fish. Maybe it’s just me being overprotective, but I think holding the derby a little later would be better for the fishery.
That said, now is a great time to get your gear in order. The bite should pick up soon, and shore fishing along the Colorado River below Davis Dam is shaping up to be excellent this year.
If you’re having any luck, let me know! The bite should be starting soon. Thanks as always for the support.
Now go catch a fish!
